Auslan – Languages

The Prep to Grade 2 students at Berwick Chase Primary School participate in Auslan classes once a week for 30-60 minutes. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the language of the Deaf community of Australia and is visual-gestural in nature. The language program is delivered with the aim of promoting inclusiveness. Students learn through a variety of songs, games, activities, discussions and a whole lot of fun!

Students learn about Deaf culture and basic sign language. This includes the following topics:

  • Colours
  • Animals
  • Greetings
  • Numbers
  • Feelings
  • Alphabet
  • Family
  • Classroom themes

Our Auslan Captains also run an ‘Auslan Choir’ were all students (P-6) are invited to attend a lunchtime club aimed at learning songs and key topics in Auslan. This has included learning the Australian National Anthem and ‘I can sign a rainbow’ song.
