Auslan – Languages
The Grade 3 and 4 students at Berwick Chase Primary School participate in Auslan classes once a week. Prep to Grade 2 students, are also exposed to some introductions of Auslan throughout the year.
Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the language of the Deaf community of Australia and is visual-gestural in nature. The language program is delivered with the aim of promoting inclusiveness, celebrating diversity and self-identity. Students learn through a variety of songs, games, activities, discussions, and a whole lot of fun!
Students are exposed to Deaf culture and basic sign language skills, including a variety of vocabulary and the grammar structures of the language. This includes the following topics:
- Colours
- Animals
- Greetings
- Numbers
- Feelings
- Fingerspelling (The Alphabet)
- Family
- Food
- Classroom themes
Our Auslan Captains for 2022 are Lily and Mineli, and they are very excited to share Auslan with our Berwick Chase community.
